National Relay Service
If you are deaf and/or find it hard of hearing or speaking using a phone, the National Relay Service (NRS) can help you.
The National Relay Service assists you with a hearing or speech impairment and can be contacted via the following:
- Voice Relay: 1800 555 727
- The Voice Relay service will have someone act as a "middle person", communicating to the chosen number on your behalf.
- TTY (teletypewriter device line): 133 677
- There are 3 types of TTY calls.
- Speak and Read will have a Relay Officer type the response of the chosen number for you to read and respond to.
- Type and Read will have you type out your side of the conversation, and the Relay Officer will talk to the chosen number, and will type the response for you to read and respond to.
- Type and Listen will have you type out your side of the conversation, and the Relay Officer will talk to the chosen number, and the chosen number will respond specifically to you.
- There are 3 types of TTY calls.
- SMS Relay: 0423 677 767
- The SMS Relay service will have you text your conversation to a Relay Officer, who will talk with your chosen number and text back their response.
- The SMS Relay service will have you text your conversation to a Relay Officer, who will talk with your chosen number and text back their response.
T.I.S (Translating and Interpreting Service)
The Translating and Interpreting Service (TIS National) is an interpreting service provided by the Department of Home Affairs for people who do not speak English.
You can free call the TIS phone line on 131 450 from anywhere in Australia.
